Don’t be daunted by the word race. The person you are racing against is yourself, not all the other runners. It’s a chance to test your stamina, your speed, your endurance or simply to see if you can complete the distance. The atmosphere at races is usually vibrant and infectious with a tangible sense of anticipation in the air. A well organized race will ensure everyone is supported and encouraged, whatever your ability.
Races and events take place through out the year all over the country. Most are organized through running clubs. Distances vary, but typically range between 3 and 26 miles. Sometimes fun runs of about a mile are arranged alongside. There is usually a fee to enter and a goodie bag for all finishers. A decent goodie bag is often enough to tempt people to enter a race! Some races can be entered on the day, but generally it is best to apply before for a place as numbers are limited.
People take part in races or events for many different reasons. For some it’s a great opportunity to raise money through sponsorship for a charity or good cause. For others it’s about testing your own ability and obviously for some its about competing the race itself.
Whatever your ability or goal it’s well worth entering at least one race and see how you enjoy it and who knows..there’s always the marathon..
