Most people start to run on their own or with a friend, but at some point at least consider the possibility of a club.

Clubs are based throughout the country and nearly every area has at least one. Most have a membership cost of something like £20/£30 a year. Members will meet so many times a week and given routes are run, with different paces being accommodated. Clubs vary immensely in terms of size, membership, types of running so it’s worth checking out a few if possible.

Running clubs are usually welcoming of new members and are generally full of friendly people who, if nothing else, all share the common interest of running. It’s a great place to get support, encouragement, guidance, motivation and advice about running. People will be willing to share ideas around such things as injuries, training schedules and local routes. There’s something about running in a group feels very different to running alone, there’s a kind of bigger dynamic and sense of belonging, almost a sense of being in a “pack”.

Most runners find they naturally develop and increase their level and speed of running when in a club as they tend to push themselves more than when alone.

For some people one of the key benefits is safety in numbers, especially throughout the winter.

Another advantage of a club is the access and support to start entering races. Clubs get discounted entry and it’s often a gentle way to be introduced to the adrenalin pumping excitement of racing.

Saying all that, for some people, it has to be solo. (Or you and a mate!) The ability to pull on a pair of trainers and exercise at a moments notice is what it’s all about.

However, don’t forget, its possible to access a club to make use of all the benefits and to experience the dynamics of group running but still have the other six days a week to do your own thing….
